Recently, Salt of the Earth Homes had the opportunity to purchase an 1800s farmhouse that has been part of a local family’s story for generations. After immigrating to the area, a local family made the home their homestead; a place where they could put down roots, raise their family, and build a life together.
More than a century later, the home still carries many of the details that made it special when it was first built.
Preserving What Makes an Old Home Special
Walking through the farmhouse, you can immediately see its history. The home still features unique original arches, detailed door trim, original woodwork, and other architectural details that are difficult to find in homes built today.
These aren’t simply design features. They are pieces of the home’s story.
While the house needs significant updates to bring it into the modern era, our goal isn’t to erase what makes it special. It’s to bring the home back to life while preserving the character that has stood the test of time.
That means finding the right balance between restoration and renovation. The electrical system may need to be updated. Exterior materials may need attention. Certain areas of the home may need to be repaired or completely renovated.
But throughout the process, we’re asking an important question:
